Newborn Bodies Found in Karachi Dump

The bodies of three newborns were found in a garbage dump in Karachi’s North Nazimabad area on Saturday, as reported by the police.

Sharea Noorjehan Station House Officer (SHO) Qamar Kiani explained that the bodies were discovered in a garbage dump in Block-L of North Nazimabad, where they were found floating in jars filled with water and chemicals.

Kiani speculated that these bodies might have been intended for “medical purposes by a medical institute” within the city but were improperly disposed of in the garbage. He also noted that typically, “bodies of newborns found in the city are wrapped up in shopping bags or bed sheets.”

Following their discovery, the bodies were sent to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for an autopsy, and the police awaited medical reports to proceed with legal actions.

A report published in July earlier this year revealed that the Edhi Foundation had buried 576 newborns in Karachi, with 200 in 2021, 289 in 2022, and a minimum of 87 in the first half of 2023.

The report also shed light on a significant disparity between official records of infanticide and the number of infants buried by the foundation. This disparity prompted the Sindh Police to “issue formal instructions to register a criminal case if a dead newborn is found abandoned.”

The SHO also mentioned the discovery of some medical instruments in the vicinity.
